Greetings from the North Country!

My name is Wendy Cnossen and I currently reside in a small unincorporated community of 1500 in the southeast interior of the state of Alaska.

My husband of 17 yrs., Jerry, and I moved from Oregon and made our home here in the summer of 2001.  We were fed up with the rat-race in the Lower 48 and were looking for a simpler way of life.  He and I built our 2,000 sq. ft., 2 story log home ourselves, even milling and sanding our logs and cutting our own lumber.  It has been the adventure of a lifetime with no regrets!  The saga continues now with the construction of our garage this summer. (2005)

I grew up in the 60's in a rural area east of The Dalles, Oregon.  My parents were both avid bow-hunters and my father a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Forestry, so early on, I learned an appreciation for nature, wildlife, and Native American weapons and art.  That interest has continued through my lifetime and has been enhanced by my love of the Appaloosa horse, their history and heritage, and my fascination with different Native cultures.

My beading started early on with a birthday gift in my early teens of one of those simple wire looms.  Before long, I was making Indian costumes for my Breyer Horse Models and daisy chains and bracelets for all my friends.  I didn't do much beading for the following 20 years.......raised three kids, Appaloosa horses, and usually worked more than 40 hrs. a week somewhere. In the early 90's I was on medical leave for almost four months, and picked up my beads again.  For a couple of years I made and sold Native American design earrings until that fad faded and we moved away to follow another promotion for my husband.  Just in the last couple of years since I've been able to retire from the job field, that love of beads and beading has popped it's head up again.  I finally retired that old loom after all these years, and am more interested now in non-loom work, whether it be traditional Native work, contemporary bead-weaving, freestyle, or stringing projects.  I am constantly amazed at how many things can be made with beads and all the different styles of beads available these days. My favorite beads to work with are the #11/0 Delicas, and I really like the brick and peyote stitch work.  Some of my other interests are gardening in the summertime, Native leather projects, counted cross-stitch, and reading.  I keep especially busy this time of year, supplying two local shops here with my beadwork, and filling special custom orders.

I am proud to show you a sampling of my work on this page.  Occasionally, I may have projects for sale and they will be posted at that time.  I can be contacted at  : wendys_whimseys@yahoo.com
